Privacy Policy
Your privacy matters at MarkBase
Last updated: October 6, 2025
Overview
MarkBase is a bookmarking workspace available as a web application and companion browser extension. This policy explains the information we collect to power these experiences, how we use it to operate core features, and the controls you have over your data.
Information we collect
- Account details. When you create an account we store your email address and an authentication credential managed by Firebase Authentication. You may optionally add profile information such as a display name.
- Bookmark data. Saved bookmarks include the title, URL, description, tags, icons, and timestamps you provide. This content powers workspace views, filters, and search across the app and extension.
- Workspace preferences. We persist interface settings such as theme choice, layout preference, tag visibility, and clipboard notifications so MarkBase reopens exactly how you left it.
- Extension credentials. Generating an extension token creates a random credential that is hashed and stored with your account to authorize saves from the browser extension.
- Service diagnostics. We collect minimal technical information (for example: device type, browser version, and API errors) to secure the platform and resolve support issues. We do not track your browsing history beyond pages you explicitly save.
How we use your information
- Authenticate you and keep your bookmarks and preferences in sync across devices.
- Render workspace features like tagging, filtering, collections, quick search, and CSV tools.
- Allow the browser extension to prefill bookmark details and deliver them to your library.
- Send required service notifications such as account, security, or billing updates.
- Monitor performance, prevent abuse, and improve MarkBase based on aggregate usage insights.
Browser extension specifics
The MarkBase extension activates only when you choose to save a page. It reads the active tab's title, URL, description (when available), and favicon so you can confirm details before submitting. Tokens issued from the web app are stored in your browser's extension storage and mirrored locally to keep you signed in. The extension does not monitor other tabs, capture keystrokes, or send data to third parties.
Data storage and retention
MarkBase runs on Firebase and Vercel-managed infrastructure located in the United States. Bookmark records, account information, and preference data remain in Firebase Cloud Firestore until you delete them. Extension tokens are hashed at rest and can be revoked instantly. Deleted bookmarks leave your library immediately and may persist in encrypted backups for a limited period before being purged.
How we share information
We do not sell your data. Information is shared only with infrastructure providers that help deliver MarkBase and who are bound to protect it, such as Firebase (authentication, storage, security) and Vercel (hosting and content delivery). We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of our users and the public.
Your choices and controls
- Update profile information, change your password, or manage tokens from Settings.
- Import and export bookmarks using the CSV tools provided in the app.
- Delete bookmarks individually or in bulk, or close your account to remove associated data.
- Revoke an extension token at any time; doing so immediately signs the extension out.
- Adjust browser storage permissions if you prefer to limit how the extension stays signed in.
Children's privacy
MarkBase is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, please contact us so we can remove it.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when we introduce new features or change how we process data. The date at the top of this page reflects the latest revision. Material updates will be communicated through the app or by email.
